Al-Jazeera Resigned Director in Berlin : The Channel Lacks Professionalism

Jan 05, 2013

BERLIN, (SANA) - Resigned Director of al-Jazeera Office in Berlin, Aktham Suliman, stressed that the criticizers of al-Jazeera channel believe that the channel's lack of professionalism has been evident in its confused coverage of the so-called "Arab Spring" and through supporting the Islamic groups, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood at the expense of other political movements in the Arab World.

"Could al-Jazeera be summed up as being a tool serving the aspirations of the Qatari government or this would be an exaggeration?" Suliman wondered in a statement to the German Deutche Welle (DW) website.

He noted that a number of observers agree that al-Jazeera is considered an essential tool for the soft power strategy adopted by Qatar on the Arab and international levels which has enabled it to play a much heavier regional and international role than its strategic weight geographically and militarily.

Suliman pointed out that when he started work at al-Jazeera channel in 2002 the channel did not suffer a lack of professionalism, adding that however the question of "agenda" for the channel was a political one in the first place.

He said that the editing staff have worked clearly to impose the agenda of the Qatari state on the Qatar-based channel.

The retired director cited in this regard the former director of al-Jazeera office in Brussels, Ahmad Kamel, whom Suliman said did not categorically deny the standing connections between the channel and the strategic directives of the Qatari state, quoting Kamel as saying "al-Jazeera is not a charity."

Suliman stressed that the recent events in some Arab countries have caused a confusion in the approach of al-Jazeera channel which was evident in its way of dealing with the events in each of these countries.

Earlier, Journalists Ghassan bin Jeddo, Hafez al-Mirazi, Akram Khuzam, Joumana Nammour, Lina Zahreddin, Hussein Abdul-Ghani, Julnar Moussa, Luna al-Shibel, Nofar Afli and Sami Haddad have all resigned from al-Jazeera channel due to its lack of professionalism in covering events in Syria and Libya.
